Fields of Mistria Story and Setting: The Town of Mistria
What is the story of Fields of Mistria? An earthquake hits the village of Mistria, and you rebuild the town while uncovering magic. Setting, lore, people.
The story of Fields of Mistria begins with a natural disaster: an earthquake wreaks havoc on the idyllic village of Mistria, knocking down bridges, cracking walkways, and sending the town's rank — and local economy — tumbling. In exchange for your help restoring the town to its former glory, Mistria offers you an overgrown but full-of-potential homestead. As you rebuild, a strange surge of magic begins to flow through the land, and that magic becomes the heart of the game's deeper lore.
The Premise: A Fresh Start in a Broken Town
Official setup from Steam and the developer's site: "Mistria, an idyllic village tucked between forest and sea, has offered you an overgrown but full-of-potential homestead in exchange for your assistance." You play an adventurer taking up the farming life to pull the town out of its slump.
The invitation itself comes from Adeline. Per GameRant's character guide, Adeline is the one who invites the player to Mistria after the earthquake destroyed parts of the town — she and her brother have been left to manage the village while their parents returned to the Capital. She's also the person you'll speak with most, since she runs the town-repair questline.
Rebuilding Mistria: Town Rank and Renown
Progression runs through the town rank (also called renown). Reviewers describe three main ways to raise it:
- Quests for the townsfolk — daily requests on the board, from fetch tasks to large earthquake-repair projects, often capped with cutscenes where villagers teach you their trade
- Museum donations — fish, bugs, crops, forage, and artifacts all count, showcasing what the region offers to visitors
- Selling goods — shipping the produce of your farm and skills
Raising the town rank unlocks new systems such as the Mines and milling, plus free farm decorations and clothing. At 1.0, the Renown level cap was raised to 100 and the Town Repair Storyline became fully completable, so the story now has a definitive ending.
The Geography of the World
TechRaptor's map guide breaks the world into a handful of notable locations:
| Location | What's There |
|---|---|
| Your Farm | Your house, crops, animals, and the dragon statue of Caldarus (your skill-upgrade hub) |
| Mistria (town) | Villagers, shops, the inn, the carpenter, the Saturday Market |
| The Narrows | Mines entrance, the Museum, Errol's Cabin; foraging and fishing spots |
| The Summit | A higher-altitude area reachable from town |
| The Western Ruins | Ancient ruins to battle foes and find treasure |
The Mines deserve their own line: you descend floor by floor, unlocking an elevator every five floors, with new biomes gated behind collecting four items from the previous one. The deepest floors — including the Tide Caverns, lava caves, and the Deep Earth — hide the game's combat, its new monsters, and the storyline of a certain priestess.
The People of Mistria
The town packs 30+ villagers with followable storylines, plus Saturday Market vendors and special characters. Reviewers single out the writing as the game's standout: every character has interests, flaws, and a job, and conversations reference what you've done — donate an artifact and villagers may mention it later, overhear food-cart gossip and you'll pick up gift hints.
The 12 romanceable characters include the doctor, the blacksmith, the traveling merchant, the bathhouse sorceress, the inn cook, the animal farmer, the carpenter, the town leader, the archaeologist — and secret candidates you unlock through play, including Seridia, the Priestess found deep in the Mines. (Full roster and details are covered in our relationships and gifting guide.)
Seasons, Festivals, and Daily Life
Time in Mistria runs in 28-day months across four seasons, each bringing new quests, festivals, crops, and even different villager outfits. Reviewers highlight the rhythm of town life: the Friday night gatherings at the saloon (where card games and D&D-style campaigns play out across entire seasons), the weekly Saturday Market, seasonal festivals like the fall harvest celebration with its pumpkin patch and dancing, and a shooting star festival where a gift can set up a date.
Magic, Monsters, and the Dragon
Strange magic floods the land in the wake of the quake. Spells in Fields of Mistria aren't little utility cantrips — they're big one-time effects like a full energy refill or watering every crop at once, and they unlock primarily by pushing deeper into the Mines. The dragon Caldarus looms over the lore: his statue on your farm is where skills are empowered, his priestess Seridia can be freed (and romanced) from Floor 100, and his statue itself is whispered to hide one of the game's secret romance options. The full resolution of the Mines storyline arrived with The Mines Update in early 2026, ahead of 1.0.
